From the forefront of the contemporary world jazz scene comes one of Eurpoe's finest piano trios...MARCIN WASILEWSKI TRIO

MARCIN WASILEWSKI TRIO - ECM
Their first international release, for ECM, entitled just “Trio” was recorded in 2004 and released the following year, immediately winning the Quarterly Prize of the German Record Critics. In the US, too, critics were taking notice. The release of “January” - recorded in New York with producer Manfred Eicher early in 2007 - also signals a change of name. Henceforth the group is, simply, the MarcinWasilewski Trio. The group continues to be run as a collective of equals, but its members have come to accept the convention that piano trios are traditionally identified by their pianists. Wasilewski does not flinch from the challenge but, with his trio partners, makes of this music something of his own. “Vignette” is a composition by Gary Peacock first heard on the album “Tales of Another”, the 1978 ECM recording which marked the coming together of the band later known as Jarrett’s “Standards” Trio. The Wasilewski Trio takes it at a statelier pace, and mines it for deeper emotions. A powerful performance, especially in the light of Marcin’s indebtedness to Jarrett as a player.
“In the entire history of Polish jazz we've never had a band like this one. They just keep getting better and better" - Mentor TOMASZ STANKO
"Their music converts rigid from into glorious freedom in the most sophisticated way" - Evening Standard (UK)
“Their years together have resulted in an ensemble with an utterly symbiotic creative flow” - DON HECKMAN, the Los Angeles Times
Marcin Wasilewski - piano
Slawomir Kurkiewicz - bass
Michal Miskiewicz - drums

ALEX WOJTEK DEMBSKI - Jazz Piano Solo Improvisation /CD Release/

POLISH FRENCH TINGE
Jazz Piano - Solo Improvisation
“This album is a compendium of Alex’s musical experiences and aural passions. On it you will hear Polish melodies, French Impressionism, Be Bop, ECM, Modern Jazz, Avante-Garde, and miscellaneous sounds inside the piano and some didgeridoo sounds.
Alex is intensely interested in all sounds the world has to offer, including languages and cultures. The magpies in his world can be so tuneful with their smooth bebop lines. In fact: I am almost certainly convinced that Magpies and other birds could have had a direct influence on bebop! Also, one magpie even sings the beginning of Chick Corea’s ‘Spain’---at speed! says Alex.
Alex W. Dembski, Bachelor of Music (Hons), Grad. Dip. Arts (Music), has extensive experience in performing, composing, transcribing, arranging, conducting and teaching in a very wide range of jazz music and mixed settings, including theatre and at all levels of musical ability.

Direct from the USA - JOSHUA REDMAN TRIO
JOSHUA REDMAN (USA)
JOSHUA REDMAN, Saxophonist, Recording Artist, Composer, Performed and recorded with artists such as: Brian Blade, Ray Brown, Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea, The Dave Matthews Band, Jack DeJohnette, Bill Frisell, Aaron Goldberg, Larry Goldings, Charlie Haden, Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove, Roy Haynes, Billie
Higgins, Milt Jackson, Elvin Jones, Quincy Jones, Big Daddy Kane, Geoff Keezer, B.B. Joshua Redman takes the concept of “playing trio” in surprising new directions. The title of his third Nonesuch disc evokes navigation, travel, a desire to find one’s bearings. Redman confirms, “This album was a journey for me, a further exploration of the trio format.
The album Compass was recorded during three days in March ‘08 at Avatar Studio in New York City, and it was a bracing leap into the unknown for him. As Redman admits, with a laugh, “Sometimes I’m guilty, with my recordings, of having too clear a plan. This time I said, ‘Hey, I just have to let go.’ If I try to plan it, it’s not going to work, so I’ll just think about some tunes that we could do with everybody together, we’ll get in the studio and see how it goes. There was a real kind of
release for me with this project, an embrace of the unfamiliar.”

Chick Corea and John McLaughlin
This will be the first time Grammy Award winning pianist-composer-bandleader Chick Corea and guitarist John McLaughlin have joined forces since they were members of Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew era band over forty years ago. Playing music from then and now, with Kenny Garrett, Christian McBride and Vinne Colaiuta, the Chick Corea & John McLaughlin Five Peace Band is poised to elevate new audiences with series of legendary concerts.
With illustrious musical careers dating back over more than four decades, Chick Corea and John McLaughlin created explosive live bands melding rock with jazz, Return To Forever and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, two of the most popular instrumental groups of all time. Their music went far beyond the ordinary, fusing energy, spirituality, emotion, with improvisation and hard rock. These groups inspired a new generation to expand their own musical horizon

...one of the great jazz trumpeters of Australia.
Bob Barnard (Sydney)
Bob Barnard, toured extensively during the 80s and on into the 90s, playing in the USA and UK as well as in southeast Asia and various European countries. He has worked with numerous leading jazz musicians, including Ruby Braff, Peanuts Hucko, Bob Wilber, Kenny Davern, Dick Carey and Milt Hinton, recording albums with the latter pair. He and his brother, Len, also made two fine albums for Sackville Records issued under Ralph Sutton's name, Partners In Crime and Easy Street. The groups that Barnard formed for recording sessions and other dates varied from quartets to 9- and 10-piece bands and he has also recorded with strings. In the mid-90s Barnard worked on an album, partially funded by the Australian Council for the Arts, on which he celebrates the music of Australian composers. With what Barnard sees as a decline in interest in traditional jazz in his homeland, the end of the 90s saw him planning to spend more time in Europe and the USA. Barnard's playing is notable for his big, rich sound and the consummate ease of his flowing solo lines. Although his name was made, and his fame spread, through his forceful playing in the traditional jazz style this is by no means the extent of his huge talent.

The Adelaide's Black Note Jazz Club presents OPEN NIGHT - JAZZ MADE IN POLAND
A short and selected story of the jazz in Poland on the BIG screen. Free Entry
... The next stage in the history of Polish jazz was called "the catacomb period" because during that period, jazz was played unofficially as an underground music in private houses. It was only the period of the political "thaw" after 1955 that brought freedom also in the field of art. It was the beginning of the development of an authentic jazz movement in Poland. Jazz festivals in Sopot were organised (in 1956 and 1957). They were the origin of the tradition of the Warsaw Jazz Jamboree Festival organised in later years. Jazz Jamboree is now one of the oldest such events in Europe.

On the public demand the JESSE DEANE FREEMAN TRIO is back to Black Note this Friday 18th April. On May 16 another fantastic evening set in cabaret style the performance of JANET SEIDEL QUINTET. Tickets for those shows are selling fast.
JON GORDON
"Gordon has embraced the history of his instrument, carrying with it the ability to extend music as a universal language"
-- Wayne Shorter
This exceptional reed artist performs and records modern jazz deeply steeped in tradition in a discography of projects as both a sideman and leader dating back to the early '90s. Even the names of the labels he records for give an indication of what to expect, The Jon Gordon Quartet emerging on Chiaroscuro in 1992, a Thelonious Monk tribute coming out two years later on Criss Cross, and the Double Time outfit stepping up the pace with four different Gordon sides in three years, beginning with a fine flow of Currents in 1998.
Gordon attended the Manhattan School of Music from 1984 through 1988 and started gigging professionally during this period with trumpeters Red Rodney and Roy Eldridge, guitarist Barney Kessel, trombonist Al Grey, drummer and bandleader Mel Lewis, and many others. Besides his own groups, Gordon is a member of the Jazz Nativity, an extended ensemble that constructs showcases for jazz legends including Latin jazz maestro Tito Puente, bass virtuoso Ron Carter, and the pianist who likes to "Take Five," Dave Brubeck. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide.

JANET SEIDEL
“With her intimate style, great feel for the lyrics of songs she sings, Seidel is one of those vocalists who is as much a story teller as she is a singer. The way she goes about handling the music comes off as a fortuitous blend of Blossom Dearie and Doris Day with an occasional nod to Julie London, although she is somewhat jazzier than the latter two"
-- US writer David Nathan in All About Jazz
Based in Sydney, Australia, vocalist / pianist Janet Seidel currently enjoys a rare and enviable international reputation with 14 CDs released in Australia and also available in several other countries.
Janet has been performing jazz oriented material and the Great American Songbook in particular since her High School and University days in South Australia in the 1970s. She has been fortunate to work with some great Australian jazz musicians in her various groups. Her first CDs made in the early 1990s feature some potent jazz content from artists such as Tom Baker, Ian Date, Paul Williams, Bob Gebert, Billy Ross and Col Nolan to name a few.
Following 16 best selling vocal jazz albums from Janet Seidel, is this luxurious new CD, “CHARADE” – The Henry Mancini Songbook just released in Australia. Each new album by Janet brings a fresh view of her uniquely cool and clear vocal artistry, and on this one the presence of piano master, Joe Chindamo, as featured sideman brings a further world class sophistication to the sound.

Black Noted from Canberra
"It was a visit to Adelaide for Christmas, and a chance to catch up on jazz in my hometown. I’d checked the Net before the visit. There seemed to be plenty of jazz in Adelaide, but not much at the time I was around. But I’d found an informative site that listed a young band playing “bossa to cool jazz and hard bop”. The band was the Christian Weber Quartet although it performed on the night as a drummerless quintet.. "

Jazz World Mourns Joe Zawinul

Joe Zawinul
Legendary musician Joe Zawinul passed away on September 11, 2007. He was 75 years old. He was an absolutely unique figure in the jazz world who led an incredible life.
After a time testing the water with a band called Weather Update and also trying out collaborations in both classical repertoire and world music, in 1987 the keyboardist formed the Zawinul Syndicate. The band celebrated two decades of existence this year even as Zawinul's health began to fail.
Though he left us in body, he remains with us in spirit. He touched the lives of countless individuals around the world, and his recorded legacy of music will enrich us forever.

Chris McNulty - One Night Only Adelaide Concert

Chris McNulty has been hailed by critics in the US as an immense talent whose vocalizing is fearless and composing peerless (Jazz Times, USA, Jan 2007), and a rare find among jazz singers. In the UK she has been hailed as one of the foremost vocalist-composers on the international jazz scene with a voice of serene beauty, striking veracity and compelling emotional fervency (Jazz Wise, UK, Jan 2007), and in her native Australia, as a superb jazz vocalist (West Australian, May 2005) who melds the sounds of jazz, blues, pop and funk into an intensely musical style with a highly professional delivery.
On recordings and in live performance, she spontaneously reconstructs melodies while retaining the essence of the original lyrics. Her repertoire ranges from classic Gershwin and Porter standards to Miles Davis classics and Burt Bacharach chestnuts with an ever increasing focus on her original compositions and lyrics.

IMPORTANT REMINDER FOR CONTEMPORARY JAZZ BUFFS
MONDAY, 6 NOVEMBER
AT THE GOV.
ICP (Instant Composers Pool) Orchestra
Prepare yourselves for the musical event of the year. ICP Orchestra from the Netherlands will be playing at the Governor Hindmarsh, 6 November at 7pm. It’s a Monday evening but well worth the effort to go and see this contemporary multi-cultural band that guarantees quality to the last note. Two generations of musicians colourfully weaved together through years of playing at Amsterdam’s famous jazz venue, the Bim Huis as well as International. All the members are veterans in their own field and have regular performances outside of ICP with their personal musical directions.
Co-founders, Misha Mengelberg (piano) and Han Bennink (drums) are the ‘odd couple’ who seem to become so aligned on a musical level. Watching Han play is almost a spiritual experience. He is one of the most in-demand drummers in Europe and his performance is nothing short of genius.
The band gives equal value to each player and most of the musicians contribute compositions. With wit and passion, ICP will guarantee to bring you to visual and audio ecstasy. Expect the unexpected. See you there!
