Precious Memories were the house band for Bijou, a series of underground concert extravaganzas that ran for some years.

9.00pm - Adam Rudegeair Quartet (MELB)
Adam Rudegeair comes from an illustrious pedigree of tutelage by Bob and Steve Sedergreen and influences stretching from Medeski Martin & Wood, Prince, and the waterfalls of jazz invention arising from Thelonious Monk. A prodigious composer and much in demand accompanist for singers and musicians alike, his compositions and playing style reflect both the dark underbelly of Melbourne’s nightlife and the universal concerns of the human condition (usually with a wry twist.) As well as being the primary musical co-conspirator with Henry Manetta in ‘the Trip’. Adam conceived and fronts the 8-piece Funk juggernaut ‘Rhymes With Donkey’, in addition to his various jazz groups. He has always sought to meld different types of groove together into one funky gumbo.
Adam released his first CD ‘Transmogrify’ in 2005, which featured all original compositions and a startling appearance by Henry on the ecstatic funk workout “Argyle Girl.” His compositions range from the dark sex-balladry of ‘All Over’, to the deep groove of ‘Mr Majesty’. Adam’s arrangements are always surprising, and prone to spontaneous combustions of deep-groove eccentricity

...The next stage in the history of Polish jazz was called "the catacomb period" because during that period, jazz was played unofficially as an underground music in private houses. It was only the period of the political "thaw" after 1955 that brought freedom also in the field of art. It was the beginning of the development of an authentic jazz movement in Poland.

Since then Duncan’s career has moved from strength to strength. He completed a sell out tour of Southern Ireland with his own 10 piece band playing at some of the top clubs in Dublin and the Southern coast including the Boom Boom Room (voted best live music venue in Ireland), The Boom Boom Room, Limerick Jazz Club and Galway Jazz Club to name a few and received open invites to return at any time!
At 21 Duncan became involved with the current “Tomorrows Warriors” musicians and was a featured soloist with Shabaka Hutchings’ Splay. This was a very forward looking band made up of some of the most up and coming musicians in London. This group enjoyed gigs at Cheltenham International Jazz Festival which was also broadcast live on BBC Radio, The Vortex and the Spitz. Its through this band that Duncan met drummer Pharoe Russel and has just collaborated with forming the experimental jazz group Artikel.

9.00pm – Adam Rudegeair Quartet (Melbourne) www.myspace.com/adamrudegeair
Adam’s arrangements are always surprising, and prone to spontaneous combustions of deep-groove eccentricity.
Friday 29 February
7.00pm – James Annesley Trio - James Annesley - sax, Kory Horwood - bass, Rob Eyers - drums
The James Annesley Trio will play originals and reworked standards with a free and creative approach.
9.00pm – Henry Manetta and the Trip (Melbourne) www.myspace.com/henrymanetta
From influences including Aretha Franklin, Sun Ra, Tim Buckley, Billie Holiday and Mervyn Peake, Henry Manetta has forged a unique and improvisatory vocal synthesis of Jazz, Blues and Soul. He first stepped onto the stage as vocalist with Precious Memories, the legendary Adelaide avant-garde Blues band that included Clare Moore (of The Royal Dave Graney Show) and guitarist Patrick O’Grady. Precious Memories were the house band for Bijou, a series of underground concert extravaganzas that ran for some years.
Henry and the Trip played a sold out show dedicated to Nina Simone at Fortyfive Downstairs, produced successful shows for The Melbourne and Adelaide Fringe Festivals, and launched their album ‘Bijou Box’ to a packed house at Dizzy’s, and at The Governor Hindmarsh in Adelaide and Soup Plus In Sydney. One of the last Trip performances at Dizzy’s before its untimely closure was “Brainville”, an evening dedicated to the music of Sun Ra. Henry and the Trip also work with the new spoken word movement in shows such as “Erosophy.”
Thursday 28 February
7.00pm – Geoff McAllister Trio - Geoff McAllister - piano, Frank Stroud - acoustic bass, and Terry Griffin - drums.
This is a trio that touches many different jazz bases. There’s more than a trace of Bill Evans in Geoff McAllister’s playing but there are touches of Ahmad Jamal, Oscar Peterson and George Shearing. The group also investigates the innovative sounds of the newer piano trios . With the versatile drumming of Terry Griffin and the inventive bass playing of Frank Stroud this is not your average piano trio.
9.00pm – Jazz Seniors - Jim Garie – guitar, Terry McDonell - electric bass, Terry Griffin – drums
Jazz Seniors will cover a lot of material, everything from Ellington to Wayne Shorter, with a lot of standards in between. Stylistically they are pretty much in the Pat Martino/Joe Pass/Barney Kessel mould NOT the Pat Metheny/Mike Stern direction.
They don't do breakneck tempos but will swing hard. Jim Garie the guitarist is one of Adelaide's best kept secrets and very well may surprise a few people. Jim is also a presenter on 99.9 5MBS. Terry McDonell is a very versatile soloist on electric bass which makes him ideal for a guitar trio. The group was put together about 2 years ago.

Thursday 14 December | 8:00 PM "SPECIAL ONE OFF SHOW"
Catherine Lambert and her Quartet
|
Catherine Lambert is a master of crooning the sultry jazz ballad and pouring sweet melody into welcoming souls just beyond the stage, or screen.
In May of 2001 Catherine sang a full season of Jazz at the very exclusive “New York Bar” at the Park Hyatt, Tokyo where she was discovered by Sophia Coppola (writer/film director) and invited to play the singer/character part in Sophia’s second feature film “Lost in Translation” starring Bill Murray and Scarlet Johanssen.
Most recently completed on Catherine’s busy schedule is her sensational new jazz Album “Back in the Swing”. The album contains fourteen sparkling songs, including seven written by Catherine and three as performed in the Academy award winning movie “Lost In Translation”.
She is just at home in delivering robust, dynamic energy and lavishing charisma in her regular live shows and recordings where Catherine captures the audience with her own inimitable stamp. Musical theatre and comedy are other areas where Catherine shines, including her various acting experiences on stage and international film but Jazz is where she continues to sparkle the brightest.
Throughout Australia, Catherine has continued to perform with some of the country’s (and international touring) Jazz greats including Don Burrows, James Morrison and as support for BB King with Dianne Reeves and the Phillip Morris Super band. |

ADD ONIONS is the ADDelaide part of the original ONIONS band with the ADDition of John Wilson, guitar and Ross McHenry, bass.
Drawing on the repertoire of Herbie Hancock, Horace Silver, Les McCann and the great standard writers of America, ADD ONIONS continues the tradition that saw discerning 1970’s Adelaide audiences faithfully following the band to Carclew, The Lord Melbourne Hotel and the Creole Room. |

Ralph based himself in Sydney in 1985 where he quickly established himself as a first call session musician recording and performing with a large and diverse number of artists ranging from rock and pop bands such as Mental As Anything and Dragon, to singers such as Marina Prior and Doug Parkinson as well as performing with jazz stalwarts such as James Morrison. He has also performed in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, the Channel Islands, the Maldives, the Netherlands and Germany.
John has continued to hone his craft in Adelaide playing most of the city’s night spots through the years and has toured with international artists such as the Platters and The Drifters as well as working in Malaysia and Indonesia.

The most excitement occurs in rehearsal when new works are rehearsed and sometimes re-worked by the group as a whole.

THE SUB - STANDARDS BE-BOP BAND
|
The Sub-Standards Be-bop Band. Just what Adelaide needs, a Sub Standards Bebop Band (this applies to both the music and the morals) comprising of Adelaide's only ALL BLONDE rhythm section (that alone worth the admission price) comprising of 'future stars of tomorrow' and the 'has-beens of yesteryear', when you could go to a jazz club watch a 'tip top' band, have a four course meal, smoke 25 high tar cigarettes, drink seventeen (17) pints of beer, two(2) casks of merlot flirt with at least one (1) waitress, and whilst driving home realize that you still have enough change from a $10 note to fill up the tank.
Featuring the 'curl defined' bass playing nymphet Felicity Freeman, New rising star Joel 'in his' Prime, on drums, and the remaining blonde (well... blonde/grey) Paul Whitney (Houston.... we have a problem) on guitar .... in the front line, there is the fast maturing (in oak barrels) Andrew Tucker on trumpet, who will be propping up Derek 'go straight to jail do not' Pascoe on saxophone (hopefully not quite corked) playing the music of Messers Parker, (home M'lady?) Monk (NOT the crap tv show), Powell (not Baden) and other such John Birks (NOT Jason) why not brush off the strides, brush in the peroxide and come out for a fun night of gawping at the stars (yes the club has a glass roof) and watch the next installment of Jazz (bone) Idols... and who knows.... you might strike it lucky ...Felicity may smile at you. |

The Onions (Reunion Show)
|
“ONIONS” came together in 1972 to play some music outside of the mainstream “pop” scene.
Grahame Conlon..guitar, Dean Birbeck..drums and Geoff Kluke..bass were the house rhythm section for several recording studios in Adelaide, playing on jingles, movie sound tracks and albums for numerous recording artists. Also house section for “ The Club Show” with Bob Francis on channel 7. With the addition of Fred Payne..trumpet and Sylvan (Schmoe) Elhay..sax the band was born and set about playing some more challenging music.
Drawing on the repertoire of Herbie Hancock, Horace Silver, Les McCann and the great standard writers of America, the band started it’s own gig at Carclew Mansion on Montefiore Hill on Saturday nights from 10.00pm ‘til the sun came up. Visiting artists in town to work all came by for a blow. (LRB, Galapagos Duck, John Rae..drummer with Herbie Mann and many more )
Gigs were also at the Lord Melbourne Hotel, The Lion Hotel and the infamous “Creole Room” in North Adelaide. For a period the band was joined by vocalist Sue Barker who now lives in Brisbane. Other Adelaide players who played with the band are Bob Jeffrey on alto sax and Phil Cunneen on keyboards.
“ONIONS” will do a once only reunion gig at (insert commercial here) With Phil Cunneen replacing Geoff Kluke on bass and guest artists sitting in.

Ralph Franke & John Paley
 |
Ralph grew up in Adelaide and after studying trumpet as a child and guitar in his teens took up the saxophone after hearing jazz masters Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and Coleman Hawkins. He studied saxophone at Adelaide University and quickly established himself on the Adelaide music scene in bands such as Rhythm Willie, the Lounge Lizards, the Fabulous Hot Boys, Vitamin Z and Invisible Mendez. He has always gone by Duke Ellington's credo that “there are only two sorts of music good and bad”, so whilst jazz has always been his first love, he was always open to learning and playing different styles of music. |

TRITONE
 |
Tritone initially was none of these, but more a passion to work in a vacuum to experiment in a way most music gives rare opportunity to do. This was based on a mutual love of free jazz forms and sounds. Over several months the three members, Ralph Franke, Peter Thurmer and Peter Nixon conducted numerous experiments from destroying bossa novas, scoring films, building ideas over a whole night and dipping into some classic standards. The regular musical meeting became an obsession and the ideas flowed. |
